Burns Oregon

Burns is a little town with a population of less than 3,000 in Eastern Oregon. It’s about 130 miles east of Bend and sits at the confluence of several highways. Highways, one lane each way, not freeways.

Our daughter Mandy and I first visited Burns maybe 15 years ago. It hasn’t changed since then, and I like that. Mandy and I visited the local museum and asked about where we could get a piece of pie. We were sent to the Broadway Deli where we had some great homemade pie.

So, when we were on our way to Bend from Idaho, I was anxious to show Joyce the Broadway Deli, if it was still there. It is still there, and it is still run by Fran Davis who has been making pies and running the cafe for decades. That’s her in green in the picture.

I’m pleased to report that the pie is still homemade and still excellent.

Several locals were finishing breakfast and coffee, and everyone was very friendly. The young man in the back of the picture was an ambulance driver from Montana on his way to help at the fires less than 20 miles away.

Burns, the Broadway Deli, and the people there are part of an America that has mostly disappeared. You have to get off the interstate and off the beaten path to find them. It’s worth the effort.
